Samajwadi Party [ SP ]

Samajwadi Party is an Indian political party in India headquartered in New Delhi and a recognised state party in Uttar Pradesh, a northern state in India. It describes itself as a democratic socialist party. The Samajwadi Party works at the grassroots level for social upliftment and believes in creating a fertile ground for the downtrodden sections of society so that everyone can live in harmony. The SP was formed in 1992 in Lucknow, and it professes a socialist ideology. Influenced by the veteran socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia (1910–67), the party aimed at “creating a socialist society, which works on the principle of equality,” and sought to mobilize the state’s minority Muslim population and members of lower castes (notably those officially classified as Other Backward Classes) into a political force.

The Samajwadi Party believes in creating a socialist society, which works on the principle of equality and the party has a secular and democratic outlook. The Samajwadi Party believes in continuously working towards the upliftment of weaker sections of society and it stands against communal forces. The Samajwadi Party is the third-largest political party in the Lok Sabha, after the Congress and the BJP, winning 22 seats in the Lower House in its 15th session. It has 8 members in the Rajya Sabha. At the national level, the party provides outside support to the United Progressive Alliance, without being a member of the alliance. However, for the upcoming general elections in 2014, the SP may form an alliance with other democratic secular parties in forming the ‘Third Front.

In the 2012 legislative assembly elections of Uttar Pradesh, SP registered a landslide victory with a clear majority in the House, thus enabling it to form the government in the state. This was expected to be the fifth term of Mulayam Singh Yadav as Chief Minister of state, but he surprised everyone by selecting his son, Akhilesh Yadav, to be the new chief minister (the youngest ever). The result was a major SP landslide, aided by allegations of corruption against the BSP and its leader, Kumari Mayawati. The party won 224 seats and formed the government. Although the elder Yadav retained leadership of the party, he stepped aside to allow Akhilesh to be named the state’s chief minister. Mulayam Singh Yadav was reelected in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, but the results for the SP were disastrous: the party was able to win only five seats.

Lohia’s ability to awaken the people with his fiery articles on Satyagraha and his innate knowledge of social problems made him the foremost socialist leader of India. The Election Symbol of the Samajwadi Party is the Bicycle. It is usually drawn on a red and green bi-colored party flag. Red is the colour of struggle and revolutionary ideals. Green is the colour of grass or greenery, denoting the basic-level of politics that the SP indulges in. Green is also the colour of hope. The Election Symbol of the SP is significant as it represents the true spirit of the party.
