Janata Dal (United) [ JD(U) ]

Janata Dal (United), JD(U) English People’s Party (United), regional political party in Bihar and Jharkhand states, eastern India. It also has had a presence in national politics and in the central government in New Delhi.The Janata Dal (United) was formed with the merger of the Sharad Yadav faction of the Janata Dal, the Lokshakti Party and the Samta Party on 30 October 2003. Janata Dal (United)'s party mentor and patron is the veteran socialist leader George Fernandes.The Janata Dal (United), commonly referred as the JD(U), is a regional political party in India. Its political position is centre-left operating on the ideologies of Integral humanism, Secularism and Socialism. 

 

The JD(U) along with its alliance partner, the BJP defeated the RJD-led UPA government in Bihar in November 2005. The government is headed by JD(U) leader, Nitish Kumar and they continued to govern state. The alliance contested Indian general election, 2009 and won 32 seats. BJP won 12 while JD(U) won 20.Today, the JD(U) has a prominent presence in Bihar, especially with leader Nitish Kumar as the present Chief Minister. It was the main opposition to Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar. But the two rivals joined hands just a few months before the 2015 legislative assembly elections in the state against the BJP-led alliance. 

 

The JD(U) along with its alliance partner, the BJP defeated the RJD-led UPA government in Bihar in November 2005. The government is headed by JD(U) leader, Nitish Kumar and they continued to govern state. The alliance contested Indian general election, 2009 and won 32 seats. BJP won 12 while JD(U) won 20. JD(U) won 115 and BJP won 91 seats in Bihar Legislative Assembly election, 2010. Thus together holding 206 seats in 243 member Bihar Legislative Assembly.Janata Dal (United) broke its 17 years old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar in protest against the elevation of Narendra Modi as a head of election campaign committee of BJP for Indian general election, 2014.

 

The Election Symbol of the Janata Dal (United), as approved by the Election Commission of India, is the "Arrow". This symbol was originally the symbol of undivided Janata Dal. The "Arrow" symbol is drawn on the middle white strip of a green and white flag. This flag was originally the flag of the Samata Party of George Fernandes. The Election Symbol of the Janata Dal (United) is hence significant as it indicates unity in the workings of the party.
