The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) is a state political party in the state Bihar, India. It is led by Ram Vilas Paswan. The party was formed in 2000 when Paswan split from Janata Dal (United). The party has considerable following amongst Dalits in Bihar. Currently party is a member of the National Democratic Alliance.Shri Paswan announced that the Lok Janshakti Party will stand for Social Justice in the Indian society. The party according to him, will always fight for those who for ages have been at the last rung of the social ladder. The party will stand to ensure the Social, Political and Economic rights to the poor, backwards and the destitute belonging to any caste, community or religion.
The LJP received a significant boost in 2009, when the Jan Morcha party, led by former Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh merged with Paswan’s party, owing to similar ideologies and party positions. However, in a reversal of fate, in the same year, the Jharkhand unit of the Lok Janshakti Party merged with the Congress, citing party infrastructural failure as the primary reason. Presently, the LJP has some presence in the states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, besides its presence in Bihar. The National President of the party presently is Ram Vilas Paswan.
Jan Morcha the party founded by former Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh was merged with the LJP in March 2009. Jan Morcha president Ajeya Singh, son of Vishvanath Pratap Singh, was immediately appointed as a senior LJP functionary. On the more disastrous side LJP suffered a major jolt when, its entire Jharkhand Unit merged with the Congress before the 2009 elections citing that Paswan had ignored them. Paswan then announced the dissolution of party's Jharkhand Unit.LJP won 6 of the 7 seats it contested including Ram Vilas Paswan and his son Chirag Paswan. Ram Vilas Paswan resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat. He was also made Minister for Food and Civil Supplies in the NDA government that came to power on 26 May 2014.
Shri Paswan though on several occasions has himself said, that more than anything else , the growth of the party is always dependent on its core principles and the hard work put in by its workers. In line with his thinking, several training and orientation programmes for the party workers are organized every year from the national to the state levels. Whether it is at the state level, district or the block level, the Lok Janshakti Party is continuously involved through its mass struggle & contact proggs, in raising the issues of the dalits, backwards and the poor people.
The Election Symbol of the Lok Janshakti Party, as approved by the Election Commission of India, is “Bungalow”. The bungalow or a posh house, represents the lavish conditions of survival of those who own it. Only the elite sections of the society can afford to live such a luxurious lifestyle; the poor can only dream about living in a bungalow. The Lok Janshakti Party symbolizes the rights and privileges of a particular section of the society, the downtrodden and the oppressed. In other words, it upholds the conditions of the Dalit communities of Bihar and other regions, their abysmal living conditions and meagre expenses they survive on. The 'Bungalow', here, represents a political and social category of the affluent.
