The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was started by a first-time politician and had no connections with any age-old political party. The new alternative is about giving power to the people, changing the culture of corrupt politics, promote transparency and pursue grassroots democracy both within and outside the organization. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP, English: Common Man's Party) is an Indian political party, formally launched on 26 November 2012, and is currently the ruling party of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The AAP has its origins in the India Against Corruption movement organised by Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal and some other social activists who had been involved in Team Anna, a strand of the anti-corruption movement for a Jan Lokpal Bill that had gained momentum in India during 2011 and 2012.
The AAP changed the face of Indian politics giving hope to the common man of becoming a game changer. Leading the party, Arvind Kejriwal transformed into a quintessential ‘Aam Aadmi’ fighting for the common man’s cause. Sending shock-waves across political circuits, the AAP emerged as a force to reckon with, after winning 28 of the 70 seats in the 2013 Delhi Assembly Elections and formed its government with outside support from the Indian National Congress (INC). On 28 December 2013, party founder Arvind Kejriwal was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of New Delhi. We want to create a system where the political leaders we elect and place in the Parliament are directly responsible to the voters who elected them. Our party's vision is to realise e dream of SWARAJ that Gandhiji had envisaged for a free india - where the power of governance and rights of democracy will be in the hands of the people of India.
At the time of formation the AAP said that the promise of equality and justice that forms a part of the Constitution of India and of its preamble has not been fulfilled and that the Independence of India has replaced enslavement to an oppressive foreign power with that to a political elite.Aam Aadmi Party is committed to the principles of justice for all and will coopt representatives from the Dalit and other minority segments of society at all levels of party organisation.
On 20 January 2014, Kejriwal and his ministers staged protests at Rail Bhavan against the Union Government Home Ministry. These came after his Law Minister, Somnath Bharti, had been dissatisfied with the response from the Delhi police to allegations relating to a neighbourhood popular with immigrants from Uganda and Nigeria. The AAP decided to contest the General Elections 2014 on a mega scale. The party chief Arvind Kejriwal contested the elections against Narendra Modi – the Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP from the Varanasi parliamentary constituency of UP. But he miserably lost to Modi.
This party will function with full financial transparency. Every single rupee collected by donations to run this people's party will be publicly declared on the party's website and all expenditures will also be declared on the website.Arvind Kejriwal and his party has taken up the daunting task of cleaning the country of corruption. With this motive, the AAP chose the humble ‘broom’ as its official election symbol. Their slogan Jhaadu chalaao, beimaan bhagaao (wield the broom, get rid of cheats) is aimed at saving the Indian political system from its corrupt politicians.Aam Aadmi Party is fully committed to the principles of gender equity and will represent women and students amply at all levels of party organisation.
